The Content of His Character

Because we can't hear it often enough ...

I hope everyone who reads this is enjoying the holiday, but taking some time to reflect on all of the wonderful things that have been done, as well as all of the wonderful things that we have yet to do.

R.I.P., Dr. King.

That's right, I keep forgetting it's a holiday for you. Not so in the great white north, though undoubtedly we have benefited by the dream and the work done by the man you celebrate.

I always have a weird duality with this day though. Here I refer to the common refrain "look how far we have come". While that is in many ways true and something to be applauded, there seems an implicit assumption by many who make that assertion that says, "we've come far enough, we are all equal". Sadly, nothing could be farther from the truth.

It was refreshing to see you refer to the historical milestones that need to be acknowledged, but also indicate there is still much to do.

I've waited all day dear- as I knew something would be coming from you. I can't help but cry every time I hear it, and no matter how many times I hear it I still break down... and given my age it has been many , many times.

I feel I ought to not comment, but feel I should. He spoke for many of us in a much larger sense. Women, GLBT, whomever- how many people out there that have alternate lifestyles and are not harming a soul? Many. I always had a sense that "I Have a Dream"extended to anyone that was shunted away by the cultural norm. And I still hold to that dream all these years later that some how, some way, we can all manage to come together merely as human.

But most of y'all are far better at such discourse and are much smarter than I am- therefore I leave it to you. Personally I will stick with my policy of simply trying to be decent to all my fellow beings- unless of course they prove themselves to be complete idiots..

Al: Yes, a holiday for most of us. I went to work today, but the schoolkids and government workers get a day off. I'm not sure that most of us really commemorate Dr. King in any meaningful way, but if a genocidal asshat like Columbus gets a holiday, it's only right that Dr. King gets one, too.

Cowbell: Nope.

Doralong: I listened to the whole thing before posting it, and I cried more than once. Partly because it's a beautiful dream, and partly because it's not quite a reality.
