Friday Jukebox, 12.14.07

When you're three sisters and your last name is Roche, and you want to form a singing group, "The Roches" seems an obvious choice. And yet ... unfortunate, somehow.

The first time I heard The Roches, it was this a cappella version of Handel's Hallelujah Chorus. Done in the style of a "beautyshop triplet," as it were, and still managing to nail every sequence, I always thought it was brilliant. And fun, which isn't something you can normally say about Handel.

UPDATE: Found this at PostSecret. Loved it. The end.

Okay, when they hit the high "Lord of Lords" I got all goose pimpley.

How terribly festive- thank you dear!

Stocked up on TP yet before everyone gets to the Giant in a full state of snow is coming hysteria?

Hat: Me too!

Doralong: You're terribly welcome. And no ... I've got a full tank of gas and will be escaping to the beach for the weekend, hopefully outrunning the awful "wintry mix" (I hate that particular word combo) before it hits.

Drive Forrest!! Drive!!! I really sincerely hope you're getting on the road tonight?? Or you'll still be on the beltway come Sunday morning just trying to get there...

Yeah wintery mix my ass Mr. Bob Ryan- just say it's going to suck and anyone with any sense should remain indoors and off the roads till it's over. Be careful punkin'-

Beautiful piece. I love acapella music and this song is both my favorite to hear and perform. Thanks for sharing.

Love the arrangement! The soprano/melody chick could've come out more -- something I don't think I've ever said before, ha! Usually the soprano chick is the diva trying to drown out the others, but in this case, the lower harmonies were very strong, even the middle, which is usually hardest to hear. Love love love a cappella music.

And I laughed when I saw the Post Secret card --- I had actually called the Bohemian over that very one. We LOVE Christmas songs, just for the sake of the actual music and tradition, but ... that often doesn't go over too well. Anyway, cant wait for the Bohemian to get here so we can start our carolothon.

Love the Roches. And someday I'd love to see them in concert.

Doralong: Just about to take off, and the roads are dry as a bone. Wheeeee ...

BreenLantern: Thanks, and thanks for stopping by. Love the blogname, by the way! Ha!

Cowbell: It's "Handel: The Contralto's Revenge," yes? The recording is much more balanced, what with producers in the glass room fiddling with knobs making it so ...

Elizabeth: Are they still performing? Because I'd see that show myself.

Eric - I heard the Roches performing on NPR just this week. I'd never heard of them before, but they sounded good and certainly talked as though they are still touring and performing.

Hahahahaha! That Mezzo was getting hers on, too. Have a fun and relaxing weekend.

Eric
How wonderful - its so much like some of the really great part singing that was traditional in New England and Upper Canada.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ERIC!!!

Now come on over here for your birthday spanking...

XO: Rockin' good news!

Cowbell: Yes, indeedy. In fact, Suzzy Roche is the one member of the group who seems to do her own thing more often than the other two, but glad to hear they still perform as a trio.

Willym: Ain't it fun?

Monica: Much better than the three-hour "Messiah" at the National Cathedral we went to last year -- we paid really good money to sit behind the huge Christmas tree. For three hours.

Taterbug: Awww. Thanks! You remembered! Tee!

i never thought i'd be toe tapping to handel :-)

that is, though, one of my favorite things about christmas. not just the chorus, but the piece that comes after it in the full whatever (it's terribly early. can't think.) . . . but it never fails to make the hair on the back of my neck stand up and i think that's pretty cool. 45 years of consciously hearing that and still . . . little prickly stand up tingly goosebumpy thrill.
